Friends of HISD Libraries became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in July 2023. Our current board members are:

Kaitlyn Carpenter
Board MemberKaitlyn is a certified teacher-librarian and former Houston ISD librarian (2022-2025), currently serving as the Public Services Librarian at the University of St. Thomas. She has two master’s degrees in Library Science, and received the HISD Library Program of the Year award in 2023. She is an active volunteer and member of the Texas Library Association, serving as New Member Round Table Chair as well as various other positions, and was a member of the TLA’s TALL Texans Class of 2025.

Anne Furse
Founder, Board PresidentAnne is a former attorney and board member of various Houston nonprofits. She is also an active advisory board member of Community of Resources (COR) Houston, a nonprofit that provides essential non-academic supplies to Title 1 HISD schools.

Debbie Hall
Board Vice ChairDebbie is a certified teacher-librarian, library consultant, and library volunteer. She is currently a part-time Public Services Librarian at Houston Community College Southwest, and is a former HISD librarian (K-12 experience). Debbie served as HISD Library Services Technology Specialist for ten years before retiring, and received the Texas Library Association Distinguished Service Award in 2024.

Dorcas Hand
Board Vice ChairDorcas is a certified teacher-librarian, founder of Students Need Libraries in HISD, and former Director of Libraries at Annunciation Orthodox School (1990-2014). She is also currently active in several committees for state and national organizations that focus on literacy and intellectual freedom.

Cheryl Hensley
Board MemberCheryl is a certified teacher-librarian, library consultant, and advocate, with 39 years of experience in HISD libraries. She was named HISD Librarian of the Year in 2002, and the Texas Library Association Siddie Jo Johnson Children’s Librarian of the Year in 2023.

Suzanne Lyons
Board TreasurerSuzanne is a certified librarian-administrator, former Houston ISD Library Specialist, and former Fort Bend ISD Library Coordinator. She is currently a school library consultant and library advocate.

Sarah Miller
Board MemberSarah is a certified teacher-librarian and former school librarian and elementary classroom teacher. She also has a master’s in museum education, with a focus on helping the public access museum collections, exhibits, and archives. She is a current library volunteer at an HISD school, and parent to a first grader in HISD.

Rhonda Miller-Eaglin
Board MemberRhonda is a certified teacher-librarian, library consultant, and literacy advocate. She retired from HISD in 2025 after 35 years of experience in HISD libraries; she also served for many years as an oratory coach at Dodson and Blackshear Elementary Schools for the University Interscholastic League and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratory Competition.

Janice Newsum
Board MemberJanice is a certified teacher-librarian, with a PhD in Library and Information Studies, as well as two master’s degrees. Her 25+ years as a K-12 public school educator included 15 years in elementary and secondary libraries, and service at the school district level as a Library Specialist and as Manager of HISD’s Department of Library Services. She has served on many committees for state and national library organizations, and is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Houston Clear Lake.

Lisa Robinson
Board SecretaryLisa is a certified HISD educator (Pershing Middle School) and teacher-in-charge-of-library (Shearn Elementary School) (now retired), as well as a longtime volunteer for HISD schools, literacy and library advocate, and former estate planning attorney.
We conduct formal board meetings quarterly, and host gatherings for HISD library staff at least three times during the school year. We invited a representative of the HISD Library Services Department to attend each board meeting until that department was disbanded in 2024.
Volunteers and donors include current and former librarians, teachers, parents, students, and supporters of literacy and learning throughout the Houston area.
